Abseil Eskapade!

6th April 2010

Thought those of you lovely People who sponsored us and supported us so amazingly through our Abseil escapade would want to know how we did at the weekend.

We really took to the Sky’s with bravery. It helped that we had an entourage of Family Friends and Colleagues who all gave up their afternoon to come and watch us bounce downward from one hundred feet off of Poole tower.

Lou and Heidi

I chose to go first (myself being the most scared by far). Heidi was wonderful the whole way through and (a little scared herself) managed to put my mind at ease with every step.

We started off at a near by Pub accompanied by our team from Eskape who toasted us with whiskys, Malibu and cokes (nothing like good spirits to help calm the nerves). Time to climb the tower came around far too soon for my liking and we were making our way up the tiny metal steps inside the water tower before we knew it…on our way to our doom….(or so I thought). When we reached our destination at the top of the tower I made a top effort not to look down at any point. John, the nicest Gent in the world met us at the top with a reassuring smile and words of kindness. I think he could sense the sheer panic that had been brewing inside me for weeks and took hold of my hand and told me all would be OK.

I stood on the edge as John tightened ropes and pulled tiny metal pulleys (I questioned him incessantly with safety questions as he went). The time came for me to lower myself from the side of the tower and that was an overwhelming feeling which totally took my breath away. Still not looking down and breathing as slow and calmly as possible I tugged at the side of the rope to ease myself down the side of the tower. It was a strange sensation being suspended in mid air with nothing to hold on to but a thin piece of rope. Even the concrete under my feet had disappeared since the Tower is shaped like a martini glass which means there is nothing to push off of. With my eyes firmly focused above me towards Heidi and John at the top I kept pulling and descending as best I could. Looking back at the video afterwards I saw how clumsily my feet and legs moved about to try and prevent me from turning outwards (i didn’t want to look down at any point)!!! When my feet hit the ground the feeling I felt was euphoric and it made me very proud. Everyone cheering and hugging me with ‘well done’ and ‘you’re so brave’ made it all worth while…Thank you to you all. Heidi was far more graceful than me and made her down with elegance and ease. It was quite surreal watching her come from where I just had but satisfying all at the same time.

So, we did it… we raised an exceptional amount for ‘The Starlight Children’s Foundation and Julias House Appeal’ (near on one thousand pounds). Thank you from the bottom of our heart for all your support.
Skydive next….or maybe a bungy. Heidi’s talking about an abseil from 500 feet…one step at a time Heids!!!

Don’t forget our charity evening on April 30th at Seven fish…only a few tickets remaining.

Until next time.
